About the initiative

New Wineskins

We are a group of people from the Lutheran Church who believe that the gospel has the power to reach people today. We long to build relationships with people who have no connection to the church. We want to share their lives and bring them the gospel in ways they can understand.

Our vision is to start, support and connect missional communities that are a clear and courageous expression of the gospel for people today.

What is a missional community?

Missional Community

A missional community is a group of followers of Jesus (typically 15–50 people) who intentionally gather around a shared desire to serve and proclaim the gospel.

Through a shared Christian life, they reach people with little or no connection to the church and create a fresh local expression of church that becomes a spiritual home.

We understand a missional community as a possible step toward planting a new local church.

Our values

How we want to walk together

New Wineskins is neither a programme nor a methodology. It is a community of people who want to encourage one another, learn together and seek new ways for the gospel.

Rooted in Christ

We walk prayerfully, seeking God's guidance. We place great importance on a personal relationship with Jesus and want to be attentive to the work of the Holy Spirit.

Relationships and trust

We have open and honest conversations, even when we disagree. We respect different callings, ministries, rhythms and contexts of service.

Learning and courage

We learn from one another. We want to have the courage to try new things, make mistakes and grow through our own experience.

Mission outward

We want to focus on people outside the church. Less inviting people in and more going out to meet them. We see missional communities as a natural part of the life and ministry of the church.

Respect for the Lutheran Church

We support existing churches and their revitalization. We honour everyone who serves across the broad life of the church. We do not want to compare ourselves, compete or create an “us and them” division.

Growing the church in Slovakia

We want to work in ways that are useful to others as well. The growth of the church and mission is our shared success, always for the glory of Jesus Christ.

Where new things are already taking root

New stories are growing in different places

Every place is unique. In some places a missional community is already active; elsewhere, people are gathering and seeking their next steps. These are not finished models—quite the opposite. They are places of learning, questions and experience that we can draw from. Perhaps your place belongs on this map too. Let us know about it.
